Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Exchange visitor (J) visas are nonimmigrant visas for individuals approved to participate in exchange visitor programs in the United States (U.S. Department of States 2022).

Average Salary & Program Duration

  • USD $14.50 - 20/hour (guaranteed for 30-32 hours per week)
  • Your length of stay duration will adjust to your program/training dates exhibited within your DS-7002 (Training Plan) + 30 days grace period (Grace period means a period to travel and explore the U.S.A, not a work period!)

Accommodation & Meal

  • It depends on the host, as stated on the Letter of Acceptance/Offer Letter.
  • Generally, most of the accommodations & meals are provided by the host.
  • The host might charge the applicants for accommodation costs of around USD $400-800 per month depending on the selected State.

Total Duration for Application Proccess

  • In total, you will complete all the processes in 1-2 months roughly. However, within two (2) weeks, you will secure your placement (will receive an interview offer from the host sooner if you are flexible and cooperative).

  • Only State Department-designated sponsors are authorized to issue the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status (Form DS-2019), which is the basic document to support an application for an exchange visitor visa (J-1 Visa). Sponsors screen and select prospective exchange visitors based on the criteria set forth in the governing regulations (22 CFR Part 62).

J-1 Visa Interview takes place, each applicant must have a PROOF OF SPONSORS (Parent's) ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL ACCOUNT SUPPORT, for example, an applicant is allowed to submit A FINANCIAL ACCOUNT STATEMENT/BANK ACCOUNT BOOK at least the last THREE (3) MONTHS with a minimum USD $10.000.
